Emission lines in GRBs constrain the total energy reservoir

چکیده
The emission features observed in the X–ray afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts are extremely powerful. Since they last at least for several hours, they imply energies of the order of 10 ergs. This in turn implies that the energy contained in the illuminating continuum thought to be responsible of the line production must exceed 10 ergs. This is a strong lower limit to the energy reservoir of Gamma Ray Bursts, which is independent of collimation and beaming, and bears important consequences on the possible collimation of the fireball radiation and the density of the medium surrounding the burst.

Gamma Ray Bursts as standard candles to constrain the cosmological parameters
Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are among the most powerful sources in the Universe: they emit up to 10 erg in the hard X–ray band in few tens of seconds. The cosmological origin of GRBs has been confirmed by several spectroscopic measurements of their redshifts, distributed in the range z ∈ (0.1, 6.3). These two properties make GRBs very appealing to investigate the far Universe. Indeed, they can be u...
متن کاملX-ray Lines in Gamma-ray Bursts and Cerenkov Line Mechanism
X-ray emission and absorption features are of great importance in our understanding the nature and environment of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). So far, iron emission lines have been detected in at least four GRB afterglows. In this paper, the observational properties and physical constraints on materials surrounding GRB sources are reviewed, and several classes of theoretical models are also discuss...
متن کاملAre Gamma-Ray Bursts a Standard Energy Reservoir?
One of the most important discoveries in the observation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is that the total energy emitted by a GRB in γ-rays has a very narrow distribution around 1051 erg, which has led people to claim that GRBs are standard energy explosions. As people made the claim they have ignored the selection biases which must be important since GRB observations are strongly fluence or flux-l...
متن کاملHigh-energy emission as a test of the prior emission model for gamma-ray burst afterglows
We study high-energy gamma-ray afterglow emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the prior emission model, which is proposed to explain the plateau phase of the X-ray afterglow. This model predicts the high-energy gamma-ray emission when the prompt GRB photons from the main flow are up-scattered by relativistic electrons accelerated at the external shock due to the prior flow. The expected spe...
متن کاملLong Gamma-ray Burst Prompt Emission Properties as a Cosmological Tool
Recently, a tight correlation among three quantities that characterize the prompt emission of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with known redshift z, was discovered (Firmani et al. 2006a). We use this correlation to construct the Hubble diagram (HD) with a sample of 19 GRBs in the broad range of z = 0.17 − 4.5, and carry out a full statistical analysis to constrain cosmological parameters (CPs). To...
